About The School

Ferndale Middle School provides a comprehensive IB Middle Years program which embraces the middle school philosophy. We provide a nurturing environment which prepares students for the transition from middle school to high school, and from high school to college and career. We envision Ferndale Middle School as a place where stakeholders promote responsible action within and beyond the school community.

Special Academics Programs
International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

Ferndale Middle School is an authorized IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program since 2010. The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Foreign Language - Mandarin and Spanish

Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture Studies
The task of this Global Language Program is to localize the Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture Studies in the USA to provide students with a global vision to enhance interaction with the local Asian cultures. This way they may benefit from the values of the cultural communications in the Global Frontier. The course materials primarily include various textbooks, PowerPoint Presentations, Educational Multimedia, cultural pictures, maps, video-clips, interactive in-class activities, etc.
Topics include:
- Cultural Diversity
- Global issues in global industries
- Compare and Contrast: the traditions of the holidays and celebrations that are celebrated in the USA and in China (e.g., Chinese New Year, Lanterns Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, etc.)
- Basic traditional Chinese culture studies on Food, Clothes, Housing styles, Transportation, Education, and Recreational culture in the USA and in China

Math Department
The Ferndale Math Department strives to provide high-quality and standard-aligned instruction for all students. We believe in establishing an engaging environment conducive for teaching and learning through critical-thinking and problem-solving activities. This allows students to make connections between math and the real-world. All math teachers are trained and coached in implementing the Open Up Resources curriculum for Sixth through Eighth Grade Math, and the MVP curriculum for NCMath1 and NCMath2. Both curriculum resources are provided to us through Guilford County Schools.

Math Courses Offered at FMS:
6th Grade: Math 6, Accelerated Math 6, AIMM
7th Grade: Math 7, Accelerated Math 7, NCMath1
8th Grade: Math 8, Accelerated Math 8, NCMath1, NCMath2

*Students may also utilize on-line tutorials through ixl.com and Apex Learning depending on their assigned course.

- Providing opportunities to develop critical thinking skills and sound judgment
- Developing an understanding of global challenges and a commitment to act as responsible citizens

Communities in Schools
Communities in Schools is an organization that provides students with the resources to be successful and achieve in life. We match students with mentors and provide small group sessions that will allow our students to build a good, solid character. We also provide basic resources for students and those in our local community. Our mission is to pour into our students and our community the resources and love that will give them the confidence that will empower them to reach for their goals and aspirations.

Career & Technical Education (CTE) Opportunities
The primary objective of Career and Technical Education (CTE) is to prepare 21st-century learners to be productive citizens, workers, and leaders in school, college, and the workplace. These courses are designed to prepare students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. Each CTE course at Ferndale Middle School offers students many opportunities to learn and apply skills such as leadership, collaboration, working independently, team-building, critical thinking, and problem-solving with various aspects of the creative process.
